Camille’s ESL Students’ write about learning
“The Art of English” way! |
|
Even if you were born in this country you need to acquire the knowledge of English. We all need to learn English. How did we do it? In the simplest way that you can imagine, using stories from our countries, art, music and painting. The students do not need to be talented to learn English. If we can do it you can do it too.

The interaction with American culture through arts gives us comprehension of its history. We have a glimpse of what Americans think, how they got where they are now. All this helps us to make our lives a little better here amid people of different cultures.

| Through arts we learn vocabulary, grammar, speaking and so on. As we enjoy the arts, we learn a lot. She doesn’t force us to learn with boring textbooks. |
|
As a result our vocabulary and speaking have improved. When the lessons are attractive they impress the students and then students learn a lot and don’t forget them.

The arts have a deep meaning in the cultural heritage of different countries. On the other hand, the arts get to spread the human abilities, to grow the sensibility and to increase job opportunities. Also, the arts are not only a way to see the world, but to grow the immigrant’s spirit.

I didn’t study English in my country. I am a student in BOCES Adult Literacy program. We learn language through the arts. This is easy, funny and very interesting. We study American art and music. I like pictures of Norman Rockwell. He is an ingenious, accurate artist.

I never thought to study in this way. I never was interested in the arts. I heard about it all the time. My dad and my husband and other people enjoyed and went to museums. I didn’t. I heard music. To explain is hard, but it is good. You need learning to be cultured.

I’ve been learning English through the arts. These are effective ways to learn a new language. For example, by describing a simple picture you can express feelings, agreement, disagreement, or you may learn new vocabulary. I think that if the new teachers are educated through the arts, any subject will be easy to learn.
